Day 3: Sun Diego!

January 3rd 2011

My first day back in San Diego sadly is an inadequate representation of my social life at UCSD. A bunch of things happened today, solely because it’s the first day of classes – but I got to see a ton of my friends again today (both in a planned and unplanned fashion).

Lauren picked me up from 7 AM and we quickly drove back to San Diego, arriving at 9:30 AM. It was fun because we got a chance to catch up since we haven’t seen or talked to each other all of break. It was sadly raining the entire time, but it was inspiring to see some Sun as we came back to San Diego. It was literally – everything up to San Diego = Rain, and San Diego = Sun, regardless of it still being cold. Eventually we parted ways, and I unpacked things out of my suitcase subsequently. Amul surprised me with a late Christmas gift – a pair of socks, and apparently a Miley Cyrus Dollar (which was legal tender, which I probably will be too embarassed to use). Heh.

After that, I went to work. It was nice to see my boss again, and do some “work”. I had to scan some documents but the scanner ended up being broken, so I ended up just leaving…. Because it was time for my first class, History of Piracy. I saw Adam & Michael in that class, and it was relatively interesting. The professor showed some Pirates of the Caribbean clips, a movie trilogy that I have yet to see (but I hope to do so at some point)… After that, I left to go on the Price Center Computers because I didn’t want to go back to my apartment. I saw Lauren yet again at the computers printing out her schedule and we compared it for similarities and differences (which there were more of). Then Alexis came and we went to Tap Ex so she could get a drink…. which eventually made her sick…… So then we went to Pines, and I saw the food, and it made me lose my appetite. I know, I happen to be quite a picky eater, but I guess that’s just something I have to inevitably work on. We soon parted ways.

I randomly saw Julie and Susan in Price Center so we talked for roughly 15 minutes. It was nice catching up with them – and I hope to see them again this quarter. It all depends on how busy Julie is, that super popular girl… Eventually I left to go to my History of Ancient Greece class. David Miano is superrrr interesting, and his class format very much parallels my History of The Early Christian Church class. Plus, it doesn’t help that Tyler, Lauren Swan (who ditched us), Matt Diamond, and Ryan O’Hara (back from Germany) was in the class.

After class I originally was supposed to go with Howard to the bookstore but he was late, so I went alone. Inside, I saw Victor, and we ended up going together and catching up as well. The bookstore becomes thus my picture of the day due to the fact that it is the hallmark to signify a new quarter. Every quarter I go to the bookstore on the first day to get books – regardless of whether or not I buy them or not, I go. This quarter, I bought only 1 course reader, and made a conscious decision to go to the library to read, in an effort to save money (but subsequently losing convenience and time along the way). Even if that experiment fails, I can buy the book at any point in the bookstore if I really desperately need them.

I also saw Lauren Adams there at the bookstore, who said she thought I looked like a man – which I don’t know to take as a compliment or as an insult (in that I looked a boy before?). Anyway, eventually me and Victor went to Price Center where I ate at Panda Express and where Victor got Arizona Ice Tea from. Eventually we wandered our way back to the bookstore where we bumped yet again into Leandro and Howard. It was funny making racist/ridiculous comments as we treked from the Book Store all the way over to Burger King. On the way, me and Howard both got Arizona Ice Tea – which apparently has 3 servings contained inside every drink. Memorable quotes include “How are your pants?”. Don’t ask, right ? :). Anyway, it was chill to see them again, although Howard WAS LATE, which made me quite grumpy because I was hungry. Luckily Panda Express (AKA fake Chinese food) filled me up and made me happy.

Finally, after that lucky meeting I went to my Computer Game Studies class – where my professor, who was sick, communicated with us entirely through typing on the computer to us. Then we watched a really interesting documentary – which left a pretty big cliffhanger to be finished on Wednesday. Luckily Johan, Katie, and Tyler are in that class, making it one of the few quarters where I already know someone within all my classes. My final class is tomorrow, but more about that on my December 4th blog :).

After that, me, Katie, and Tyler walked to the PAW meeting, which meets every Monday to discuss programming events. It’s relatively chill, but also relatively boring, but at least there was free Pizza. The moments after the meeting were far more interesting – just talking to Lauren Coleman, Alex Goetz, Matt Diamond, Tyler Nelson, Amul Shah, Rosario, & Jake was relatively entertaining. It’s good to know that we are super close to one another still. It’s sad that many of them are graduating next year though.

After the meeting I went back to my apartment with Lauren. Matt Olsen came over, and we all played risk with Amul. We played incorrectly without any cards, because Matt was persistent in doing so. Subsequently we ended up giving up within 30 minutes, because it wasn’t as fun as we had hoped. In the end I ended up blogging while Matt and Amul were playing videogames – and as me, Lauren, and Amul were talking. The night pretty much ended when they left. To wrap things up, it’s good to be home in Sunny San Diego.

The new house sworn into Congress will vote next week to repeal the new health care bill. This sets up a confrontation and epic showdown between Speaker of the House John Boener and President Barack Obama, which will be very interesting to watch. The repeal vote will be next Wednesday, January 12th, and thus the results will be posted on here subsequently. The Republican repeal bill is 2 pages long, in contrast to the 2,000 page Obamacare bill that passed last year. I have mixed opinions about the healthcare bill. I feel like it will help people, but the government has no place in mandating health insurance. Every time the government tries to take over something – it fails. USPS sucks compared to UPS and Fedex for a reason. Private school is working better than Public schools because of the lack of a government mandate. I have my fears that the health care repeal bill might not pass though.

On January 3rd, 1977 Apple Computer is incorporated 6 months after Apple began selling it’s first Apple I personal computer kit for $666.66. It’s claimed to be created by both Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, but really Wozniak created everything himself (he’s the smart one) – Steve Jobs on the other hand was a better businessperson in acquiring profits mostly for himself. Shortly after this moment Bill Gates would see some of Apple’s code and reuse it to make Microsoft, which would end up surpassing Apple. Sadly enough, Apple is never going to get a majority of the marketshare. I have faith in Google to do so however.

P.S.: So don’t wait for someone to tell you it’s too late. Cause these are the best days. There’s always something tomorrow, so I say let’s make the best of it. So don’t wait cause no-one can tell you it’s too late, Cause these are the best days. There’s always something tomorrow so I say let’s make the best of tonight. Yeah let’s make the best of tonight. We’ll make the best of tonight. Here comes the rest of our lives.
