Day 365: A New Year in 2012

December 31st, 2011
The last day of 2011 gives me the ability by which to reflect on the events, and subsequently the pictures I took all year as part of the 365 project. I snapped a picture of the cabin I would wake up and sleep in as the clock struck midnight. In the morning I got breakfast at the Lodge (a morning routine entailing eating bagels with strawberry cream cheese and listening to intellectual conversations regarding Ron Paul). Good times. Eventually, the campaign would designate us to our city of the day: today being Cedar Rapids. I went with a new batch of people today, including Chris (who was black), Edgar (who was white), and Nikhil (who was Indian). We took 90 minutes to arrive stopping at a Coffee shop for a bit before finally getting there. As Nikhil and I walked roughly 8 miles finding houses, we only encountered “No’s”, people not there, or barking dogs ready to attack us. The biggest tragedy was having to find our way back to get picked up, as we spent hours upon hours walking to our destination: only to find a nice couple who would drive us there (5 miles away). I think we were able to convert them in our short time in the car to support Ron Paul; it was lucky they weren’t Rick Santorum fans. It was rough walking in the cold winds but luckily I had gloves on as the skies got darker and darker. Edgar and Chris picked us up, we ate at Panjero’s. It wasn’t better than Chipotle as Edgar claimed (LIAR) BUTTTTT because I was so hungry from walking for miles, it was decent as it flowed around in my stomach. We walked next door to meet up with Chris and Edgar (where we had a pretty awkward conversation about whether “John” was my real name”, before driving back to the cabins for 90 minutes. When I got back the year ended with some data entry, chillaxing in the lodge with everybody else (including a countdown with some Ron Paul fans), and me reflecting on the events of 2011.

History
On this day in 1999, the United States, in accordance with the Torrijos-Carter Treaties, officially hands over control of the Panama Canal, putting the strategic waterway into Panamanian hands for the first time. Crowds of Panamanians celebrated the transfer of the 50-mile canal, which links the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and officially opened when the SS Arcon sailed through on August 15, 1914. Since then, over 922,000 ships have used the canal. = IMPERIALISM.
News
In his last official act of business in 2011, President Barack Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act from his vacation rental in Kailua, Hawaii. In a statement, the president said he did so with reservations about key provisions in the law — including a controversial component that would allow the military to indefinitely detain terror suspects, including American citizens arrested in the United States, without charge. FAIL. OUR ONLY HOPE IN 2012 IS RON PAUL. RON PAUL OR BUST.

P.S.: 2012
