Postcards of Freedom

About a year ago, I mailed about roughly 100 letters and nicknamed them “letters from quarantine”. It was important during the height of the global pandemic to write to people who I deeply cared about, and had an impact in my life at some point. One of those recipients died last year, which still saddens me to this day, but I live with the memory of her forever in my head and my heart.

Now, nearly a year later, as people continue to get vaccinated, the country is beginning to open up and ease restrictions. If there’s anything last year taught me, it’s the importance of maintaining and holding firm the connections I’ve built over the years. I want to continue to water those friendships and wish the best for people as we begin ushering in a summer of freedom.

Subsequently, I have decided to mail 125 postcards of freedom, to celebrate the freedom that will come with a post Covid-19 lifestyle. Seeing that I usually write letters to my students every year in person, I had to fill the void somehow. My goal was to mail them all out by July 4th in time for Independence day, but I am well ahead of schedule. Here’s hoping it will brighten up someone else’s day, and they can pass that joy and kindness on to someone else to make the world a little bit better.
