Breaking News! Katherine is 12 weeks pregnant, and I’m officially on my way to becoming a father! Come 24-29 weeks from today, a new child will be added to our little family. This calls for a celebration, but it also means I’m evolving into a new chapter of adulthood. Perhaps from a Charmander into a Charmeleon, you could say. By May, you can expect this blog to evolve right along our baby into a space dedicated to the joys and challenges of parenthood.
How am I, a baby myself, going to raise one? I honestly have no idea. I imagine that no one truly feels prepared to be a parent—no matter the classes, the books, or all the babysitting experience in the world. The real learning, I suspect, happens on the job. I’m grateful that teaching has taught me to be flexible and adapt on the fly. It’s an unpredictable career, requiring quick adjustments and an ability to respond to whatever situation arises. I imagine parenting will be similar: full of surprises, twists, and unplanned scaffolds needed. And, of course many diaper changes along the way. And yet, I’m grateful to share these blessings with nobody else but my wonderful wife.
Parenthood isn’t something that can be programmed. I realized this recently while watching The Wild Robot, where Roz, a robot, discovers that raising a gosling requires more than instructions—it’s about adapting, caring, and growing together. I’m thrilled to begin this new journey, knowing our baby will bring a beautiful, unexpected chapter to our lives. I’ll do my best to document it all here—at least until the baby eventually takes over this blog when I become too old and stale.
