Back To School Night

Tonight was my 9th back to school night. Which meant of course I had to work from 7AM to 7PM roughly, reminding me a lot of my charter school days.

It was a pretty busy day for me. I led a Civic engagement meeting in the morning, co-taught some classes, taught some SDC classes, pulled out some students, had a Builder’s Club meeting, and then FINALLY set up for back to school night.

I prefer the traditional back-to-school-night where parents go to each classroom. It gives them a little bit of a glimpse into our personality when we present. I am able to show my sarcastic and cynical personality more. That being said, this format of parents just visiting our department tables is a lot easier to have direct conversations with parents. Seeing as I am merely a “co-teacher” this year, the attention wasn’t focused on me. I mostly had conversations with parents of students I had last year, which was quite exciting, especially when I told a parent her child needed to have better taste in boys. Or better yet, not date any boys at all.

The lack of parents allowed me to supervise my Builder’s Club much better, when they sold 7 leaves to our clientele. We sold out within an hour or so, and I’m happy the kids had fun doing so in the process, even though they crushed one of the cups accidentally in the middle of the shift. They don’t look happy in the sun in this photo though.

In summary, it was a well executed event in summation. 30 more years of back-to-school nights to go.
