When I said 2020 would be a new year for me, and would bring with it a fresh new perspective on life, I never would have anticipated such an unprecedented sequence of events.
As a historian and lover of history, let’s just say 2020 is already forever etched in the realm of history, as the year of the global pandemic. And even though I refuse to play that boring board game ever again, it long foreshadowed what would inevitably happen to the United States and the rest of the world.
Needless to say, many people underestimated the crisis before now. Who’s to blame them though, with the media overly sensationalizing past diseases like SARS, H1N1, Ebola, and MERS – how would anyone have known this would be the crisis to bring the world and the global economy to a halt?
Having been successfully quarantined over the past week at home, it’s already becoming glaringly obvious to me the things that I undervalued when life was seemingly normal. Everyday experiences like going to the gym, eating out with friends, going to the movie theaters, and engaging in other social activities are now restrictive in nature. And obviously this includes trips to my favorite restaurant in the form of Phil’s BBQ.
I promise to myself and to many others that I will appreciate the simple things in life when this crisis is over. Namely – going to work, socializing with others in public places, and just enjoying the simplicity of life.
Until then though, I’ll continue watching movies and TV shows at home, reading books, and keeping my mind occupied with as much as possible.
Here’s hoping everyone can endure this global pandemic and we all come out this as better people, with a fresh new vision of 2020 and the world, and a greater appreciation for all the simple things in life.
I wish everyone well in their struggles and hope we can all overcome this together. Feel free to reach out to me if you ever need anything – or even, a friend to talk to, because I too, am craving social interaction as well.
