The Wellness Challenge, Week 1

In striking a balance this year in terms of fitness, I have started the Wellness Challenge at Bright Star Schools. Each week we compete as a school against other Bright Star Schools, and we also compete against each other for a top prize for each team.

This week, Rise Kohyang won, due to the competition blistering between me and my vice principal.

I was upset to learn that I trailed him by about 12,000 steps last week. I’ve been averaging about 28,000 steps last week, but I’m trying to up it to about 40-50,000 steps a week, which is quite a lofty goal for a teacher.

How did I obtain my goals? Instead of staying stationary while doing everyday activities, I instead walked around while doing that. That entailed brushing my teeth, walking around my classroom a billion times, and pacing back and forth constantly the entire day.

I also ran at 5 AM most days as well as USC’s track, occasionally after work.

On the weekends, I went hiking to try to obtain a better daily step count. This month will probably entail more physical activities in terms of entertainment.

At the same time I wanted to create a balance and not be too moving. After all, I did need some rest – which is why I also entailed in activities like dinner, watching Netflix, watching a 3 hour movie with friends (The Hateful 8), going karaoke, etc. Those activities gave me the strength I needed to overcome any physical challenge my legs mounted me.

Hopefully I win next week, but the odds are against me. My boss is constantly walking around. I need to figure it out.

PS: In other news, I’m going to HAWAII with the students for the end of the year Life-Experience-Lesson (essentially a week long field trip) It will be fun, but I will have to drive the kids around in a rental car there. My first time in Hawaii and simultaneously driving a big car.
