Day 45: Single Awareness Day!

February 14th, 2011

Today was Single Awareness Day, a day for all members of the lonely hearts clubs to conjoin together in a spectable to protest Valentine’s Day, a holiday where the commercialization of love assimilates into our consumerist & increasingly transient culture. And no, I am not bitter when I say that.

The day was relatively normal, with me going to work for a few hours, and immediately following it by doing what one does best on Single Awareness Day: eating alone. I figure by doing so I could pay tribute to all those who lived and died alone in their life, not needing a Valentine to live or function. This included Elizabeth I, who NEVER EVER GOT MARRIED….. She got married instead to her country. What a great girl. <24. And no… I don’t really like Foodworx that much BUT it is the closest dining hall next to Pepper Canyon, and thus a constant source of delight for my mouth. Immediately after I went to class, where the professor made a 24 reference. It was amazing. He was talking about Greek plays, and noted how Aristotle said all Greek plays were in real-time “much like an episode of 24”. The class burst out laughing, and I was proud to be a 24 fan at that very moment in time.

I bumped into Alethia after class and we discussed potential communication classes to take the upcoming Spring Quarter. We agreed last quarter to hang out, but never got the chance, but that might otherwise change as we decided to “maybe” watch Glee on Sunday. Shrug. I then proceeded on my merry little way to protest Valentine’s Day by going to Clics and playing on computers the best way I knew how… ALONE! That’s just the way to go folks. After that I went to class where we watched a documentary about MMO’s that extended 20 minutes past the otherwise allocated time period. I figure I needed to get away from all the mess and junk that people associate with Valentine’s Day. Thus, Geetha and I went to Best Buy to look for a new camera that would otherwise replace the one I’ve been borrowing from her for my 365 project. Along the way I got dinner at Flame Broiler, and we ultimately decided, since we were already there, we would watch a movie. I saw couples EVERYWHERE, seeing terrible movies like No Strings Attached and Just Go With It. I took a picture of the movie theater as we decided to watch a purely platonic movie – “The King’s Speech”, which was pretty good, but pretty slow. I was hoping for more history in it, but Winston Churchill’s face was enough to impress me. After, we went to Starbucks before ultimately heading back to campus.

When I got back me and Amul watched Ken Jennings as he competed against Brad Rutter and the IBM Supercomputer. Unfortunately, the episode didn’t even finish, as they spent half the episode giving us a dialogue of what the computer could do. Hopefully the next two nights will be amazing – if so, I’ll make it the picture of the day at some point. Amy came over by the night’s end, and delivered me some Valentine’s Day Candy. ICK. Who needs love anyway…. Spoiler: I do.

The U.S. House of Representatives voted Monday to extend three provisions of the Patriot Act and Intelligence Reform bill that are due to expire next month. The bill passed by a simple majority vote of 275-144. The same measure failed last week by a vote of 277-148, which fell short of the 284 needed to pass then because it was considered under a House rule that required a two-thirds majority. The bill extends the provisions through December 8. OMG FAIL >:(
On February 14th, 1962, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy gives a tour of the White House shown on Television which 3 out of 4 Americans watch on TV. Nice. Back when the First Lady was actually likeable. JK, Michelle Obama is actually quite likeable, as a deep contrast to her husband at least. =P
