Switching Departments

When the Anaheim Union High School District made the difficult decision to cut over 200 temporary positions at the end of the school year, its impact was felt throughout the entire system. I am certain that the consequences of this decision will become even more pronounced in the upcoming year, with larger class sizes and the loss of many exceptional teachers.

As a result, it was inevitable that my position in the history department would be filled by tenured teachers from various other schools. Recognizing this, I decided to put my mild/moderate education specialist credential to good use and make the switch to special education. While I do hope to eventually transition back to history, I approach this change with optimism, believing that the experiences in special education will be positive and facilitate a smooth transition when the time comes.

The following year is bound to present its challenges. Although I had the opportunity to utilize my skills in co-teaching alongside John Havey last year, I anticipate the need to catch up in areas such as writing and developing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). I do have concerns about whether I will be able to perform at the same level, but I am committed to adapting as quickly as possible. Moreover, I am grateful for the opportunity to join a department filled with wonderful teachers and genuinely kind individuals. While it is undeniable that Rob Gaudette will be irreplaceable, I am confident that Sean Griffin will bring his own unique qualities that make him equally special.

There is a lingering concern that I may no longer be at the forefront as the “co-teacher” in the room. Nevertheless, I approach the collaboration with the 8th-grade science teacher next year with hope, aiming for mutual respect and peaceful coexistence. We’ll see what unfolds, and I am ready to face the journey ahead with an open mind.
