One of my favorite television shows growing up was Digimon: Digital Monsters. While many feel like it was a copy of Pokémon in many ways, I quite enjoyed the show. I would even say the show was better in many ways, with a deeply serialized plot in seasons 1 and 2. I didn’t care much for the third season when the continuity of the show changed sadly. However, I will always remember waking up early on Saturday mornings to watch new episodes on Fox Kids. Pokémon the series on the other was too much of a filler and got very repetitive by end of the Indigo League.
If Digimon had more cultural relevancy today, I would probably opt to use it as a classroom theme over Pokémon. But sadly Digimon has faded into obscurity, while Pokemon remains the most profitable media franchise in the world to date. And so, I’ll continue using it so long as it is relevant to my students.
And that’s why I have a Charmander tattoo, and not an Agumon.
