Item of “Sentimental Value”

Went to a “Capturing Kids’ Heart” Training today. It was a bit redundant since I feel like I already do a decent job of capturing some’s students affection through writing letters/Pokemon cards/etc/etc. I suppose there’s always room for growth though.

At the end of the day we were placed in a circle and asked to share an item of significant “sentimental value”. Most people shared jewelry or pictures or their children. Cool, but a bit unimaginative.

I shared…. a Phil’s BBQ T-shirt I was wearing. I subsequently told the circle that I went 222 times, taking 100 7th graders on a field trip (Trip 155), my bachelor party (Trip 200), and of course my baby shower (Trip 219). Some people laughed and even the moderator was amazed. More questions arose, and I subsequently told the audience how I keep track of all my visitors on an excel spreadsheet and update my blog with all my visits. Needless to say, it “broke the ice”, even though it was clearly the least serious sentimental item I could have brought.

At least I have a “fun fact” I can bring up as any icebreaker in the future.
