Today is America’s 249th birthday. I will be forever grateful to America for the various opportunities it has provided me and my family over the years. It’s subsequently not a surprise that so many people would risk their lives just to come here and start anew. I often remind my students to invest in their education, not just as a means to success, but as a way to engage with the possibilities that the American dream can offer—while also recognizing that access to that dream isn’t always equal and must be continually fought for and expanded.
This just so happens to be Kai’s first 4th of July. Though he will not do much other than hear loud fireworks all night from our various neighbors, I’m hopeful he will too appreciate the freedom (and the privilege), that living in America brings.
When the Declaration of Independence was adopted 249 years ago, it put forth the bold ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. While America’s journey toward fulfilling that promise has been uneven, marked by struggle and progress alike, I remain hopeful that our collective efforts will continue to move us closer to justice and equity for all.
Happy 4th of July and independence day to all, as we continue to enjoy our freedoms.
