Sitting in my classroom since the start of the school year is an Angels poster featuring Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani. Given recent developments, I decided to fix the poster to outline the new changes that have happened as of last weekend.
I don’t really have a dog in the fight since I only go to 1-2 Dodgers and Angel games a year. Even when I do, it’s more about the ambiance of the environment more so than everyone else. Obviously this includes eating some overpriced stadium food. Even with 2 of the best players, the Angels somehow end up disappointing due to how bad the rest of the team is. But anyway, it’s great that Ohtani was able to stay in Southern California, and simultaneously prove that Asians can be jocks too. Not all are destined to be nerds.
I’ll probably keep the poster up regardless, since I’m still teaching in Anaheim, and I imagine many of my students are still loyal fans. As for me, I’ll continue rooting for the success of both Ohtani and Trout.
