In the short story the Monkey’s Paw, the narrator gets to wish for three things, each of which have dire and more dramatic consequences than he could ever imagine.
If I could wish for three things right now, it would be
- My friendship back. I made the decision to room with a friend this last year, and because of that decision, our friendship is now destroyed. How was it destroyed? It’s too embarrassing to say. A few months ago, I received a text from my roommate to go get toilet paper. I told her we already had toilet paper (it was that of the industrial size), pictured below).

Anyway, she asked me to get regular toilet paper, to which I told her I would buy it AFTER the industrial toilet paper ran out, which was roughly 2 weeks later. Ever since that point, she has not been talking to me, and when I try to say hi, she pauses awkwardly for like 30 seconds and then angrily says hi back. Pretty passive aggressive. I’m used to dealing with this kind of behavior in middle school students, but not necessarily adults. Long story short, she can’t get over it, even to this day, and hasn’t talked to me since. We have subsequently chosen not to live with one another the following year. If she ever reads this post, I hope she realizes I am quite sad over it and I wished this didn’t get in the way of our friendship. That being said, she has every right to feel however she feels about the given situation. - l wish for an amazing year in Alhambra. I think my new rooming situation is the best one I’ve ever had, in a wonderful looking Townhouse in a wonderful neighborhood. I remember when I lived in Las Vegas and feared being shot every day. That was fun. Anyway, here are some pictures below.

I didn’t show a picture of my room because it’s not quite set up yet.
Sidenote: While picking up the Internet router and returning my keys, I noticed that a few other neighbors copied my trend of dumping their mattress outside. I’m quite a trend-setter.

- My third wish is that this becomes my best year of teaching yet. I am hoping to do less work (the bare minimum actually), while hoping to cultivate my craft. I know this cohort will be much more difficult, but that is why I hope the relationship building aspect of the job done Week 1 will be successful enough to win them over. I spent a majority of the day planning for my classroom theme “Snapchat”, which I will show you what it looks like over the next couple of days.
