Today I came to a realization I’ve probably noticed for a while now, but never felt the need to express, that bars generally are a terrible location to meet people.
I meant to stay in Los Angeles all weekend, but I had to go back to Tustin in order to check into Urgent Chair. They checked my finger and gave me some antibiotics to potentially prevent my finger from falling off. *Fingers crossed it doesn’t…. or not. As a result, I got to enjoy some traditional Vietnamese food in the process at Garlic and Chives, followed by the standard boba drink.
At night I attempted to socialize going to the Continental Club for a boardgame event. Luckily for me I was able to resist my temptations at the bar and NOT drink, which allowed me to more easily observe the scene around me – many strangers using alcohol as a mechanism by which to socialize with others. There is clearly no problem with that, but then I also noticed how loud the music was and how five guys would simultaneously compete for the affection of one girl at a time. Survival of the fittest at its very core. Anyway, I got to briefly catch up with a friend who I haven’t seen since high school, which was nice, and played a quick round of Jenga and several rounds of Cards Against Humanity. I also practiced my ability talking to strangers, which has dramatically improved, although I do get bored asking the same questions and pretty bored listening to generic background information.
I made new friends in the process, some of which even offered to eat kbbq in the future and even drove me home. A girl I met from England told me when I left to “have a nice life”, something that just sounds super weird coming from somebody else, and also super weird to hear in a literal context.
Anyway, bars are definitely not my scene. I mean, I’ll definitely go with coworkers or friends to have a good time, but I don’t think they’re a particularly good place to make friends or find a wife. This reddit post below summarizes my general thoughts on it:

Let’s just say it’s definitely not the way it looks in movies or tv shows.
