Quality vs. Quantity

It’s pretty apparent which one wins in my book: quality will always trump quantity, in nearly every situation. First and foremost, let’s define the two terms to determine their differences:

Quality: The standard of something as measured against other things of a similar kind; the degree of excellence of something

Quantity: The amount or number of a thing not usually estimated by spatial measurement

The quality of one’s life supercedes the quantity – meaning, I’d rather have a short but happily fulfilled life than a long and dull life. Perhaps that’s one reason to cherish every day and live everyday with no regrets or worries.

I’d rather have a high-quality meal that is smaller in size, than a low-quality meal that is bigger in size (namely fast food)….

I’d rather watch a good movie or television series, than watch 10 terrible movies or shows.

Now, let’s say we have the same degree of “quality” in a product. Is it better to have more or less? In certain situations, I would say yes, but in most situations I would say no… Too much of anything is a bad thing and can lead to addiction – namely alcohol, and fast food. Even if you have a ton of high-quality friends, it becomes virtually less and less likely to grow your relationship with them if you’re constantly restrained on time.

Which brings me to the final point: At the end of the day, I’d rather have 5-20 GREAT friends, than 200-300 okay ones. At the end of the day, the quality of one’s friendship and relationship with others can profoundly shape the quality of one’s life. Having too much of anything if anything could create dependence. Too many people measure their happiness upon having a ton of electronics, a ton of games, a ton of friends, or a ton of money. What they should be focusing on however is ultimately improving their condition of life, changing the quality of the world around them. Only then can happiness ultimately be achieved.
