Throughout the course of history, a rivalry has fundamentally shaped the lives of the entire universe, one so transparent between the jocks and nerds of any given society. Today is the day where this rivalry will be dissected to ultimately determine which of the two groups are better. This will done through a variety of factors including 1) Intelligence 2) Attractiveness 3) Strength 4) Popularity 5) Money 6) Love and  7) Contributions to Society.

1) Intelligence

Generally speaking, nerds have always been more focused on academia than jocks have. Though this not necessarily makes them more intelligent, this propels their ability to get into a better university, obtain a better degree, and have a career that requires generally more thinking. Jocks tend to focus primarily on winning, not necessarily in life, but winning through the mechanisms of a game – be it football, basketball, baseball, etc. Subsequently, Nerds obtain a point in this category.

2) Attractiveness

Nerds are the dorky ones in society often teased and picked on in high school (ironically, by the jocks). Jocks are the ones who get the cheerleaders and/or girls of either high class or extremely low class. Regardless of the case, girls are more likely to date jocks due to 1) the amount of physical attractiveness they have and 2) the amount of confidence they have in themselves (due to their ability to win the hearts and souls of the females around them).

3) Strength

This is pretty much a given. If a jock were to challenge a nerd to an arm wrestling contest of some sort, I’d guarantee you the jock would win probably 90% of the time. The jock’s strength in respective fields or courts they play in transcends that area to the real world, leveling them up in terms of strength and endurance.

Jocks: +2

4) Popularity

Jocks are more popular. Nerds tend to be introverts focusing primarily on academic and less on the obtainment of social skills. Jocks obtain these social skills through their various actions with one another, allowing them to further use these said skills later in life. And though nerds eventually catch up in social skills (through various college experiences, life experiences, etc.), the jocks are always a step ahead in the obtainment of popularity. They always have friends, they always have someone to count on, and they will always be subsequently popular.

Jocks: +3

5) Money

The chances of a jock making it big in sports is highly unlikely. Those that would eventually do it professionally account for less than 1% of the jock population in the United States. Those are the ones more than likely obtaining million dollar contracts, and obtaining the monetary success they have always dreamed of. For the most part though, the road trip to being a nerd eventually results in a higher level of monetary success. Their diplomas and intelligence obtained from the years studying alone in their rooms will eventually allow them to translate those skills in the real world to obtain money. On the other hand, jocks, if never obtaining any skills other than that of athletics, will eventually crash and fall on the economic ladder, resulting in an ultimate capitalist failure (on their part).

Nerds: +2
Jocks: 3

6) Love

In the end, love is all that matters. Jocks, although able to temporarily satisfy their lustful nature (in high school through cheerleaders, etc.) never obtain the quintessential love that is necessarily to propel us all through life. Jocks obtain a shallow and trivial form of love based on temporary success. Nerds, on the other hand – on their search for a law school or medical school degree, could often be used for a more trivial form of love – through the form of a shallowness based on money, cars, and success. Still, because nerds are allowed the ability to make more choices later in life due to their monetary successes, are more likely to obtain love – in the form of “the one” in the long run. Jocks are three times as likely to get a girl pregnant and subsequently trap themselves in a situation they might not want to be in forever.

Nerds: +3
Jocks: 3

7) Contributions to Society

Perhaps this might come out as a biased statement, but nerds are the ones that contribute more to society.  Jocks provide mere entertainment value if successful in the form of various sports (that I think are over-hyped and overrated in our shallow society). Nerds are the ones that will be working in the laboratories, becoming doctors, scholars, professors, etc. Nerds are the ones that will eventually cure cancer, or even change the course of history. Nerds in the end win because though Jocks win the “battle” in high school, nerds will eventually win the war.

Nerds: +4
Jocks: 3

  1. I remember a quote from Patrick Norton from “The Screensavers” TV show on TechTV: “Geeks are the ones who control things in the future.” Needless to say nerds are part of this and that there are also “jocks” who find their way to success in the future.

Of course, one could say I’m a bit biased since I am part of the geek category. So to be fair, “failure” or not achieving “success” is also a very real possibility for geeks/nerds. However, statistically, the chances play in the favor of geeks/nerds. Quotations on “failure” and “success” because those are both very subjective terms.

I personally prefer not to classify people into specific categories since it’s a far too generalized way of looking at things. Unfortunately, there is a reason stereotypes exist and if we really wanted to, we can somewhat categorize people into distinctive categories. My little exception for not preferring to do this is wearing the geek label loudly and proudly.

  2. There’s no reason jocks can’t be nerds and vice versa. I personally like hanging out with nerds cuz I’m a thuper nerd myself and that allows me to crack more jokes and have more similar topics to talk about.

With that being said, I think it’s good to have a balance of both nerd and jock ideally aka PLAY SOME MORE BBALL WITH ME

  3. Very stereotypical classifications that you see on tv and such. I never really noticed it in reality that much….. well i guess there was some of it in high school. Confidence and intelligence = attractive. You need to have both.
