July 2010 & Summer Session I Updates

July is over! And oh man, what a month it has been. This month has really been good for my mental & physical well-being, considering I feel a lot better about myself in comparison to last year.

I wish I could say my departure from the word of facebook for a month was the line of reasoning for this mood shift. But seriously, there’s just SO MANY factors that could have contributed to my happiness. Although I figured out pretty soon logistically during the month of June that Facebook was certainly NOT making me happy, in more ways than one. Let’s see:

1) I started doing P90x, and exercising on a daily basis. Maybe a better physical well-being contributes to a better mental well-being?

2) It’s summer, for goodness sakes. And although last July it wasn’t this great, this time I’m not worn down by missing / being attached to any place (orange county) or person.

3) Maybe Conference Services just really sucked last year. And environment, health, and safety + summer session I was a lot better (I really enjoyed this class & it opened my mind on how evil the media corporations in the United States are). ALSO, because I control my work hours, maybe the whole notion of not having to wake up early – getting 7-9 hours of sleep every day is affecting my mood positively.

4) One thing’s for sure. It’s certainly not the food. Sure, I ate out a various amount of times (probably way too many), BUTTTTT I’m not too personally fond of the food I make. For instance, I tried cooking tofu once and seasoned it with so much salt that it was SUPER bitter & disappointing subsequently.

One thing’s for sure. Hopefully I can carry this mood into the school year.

Summer Session II starts next week, and I ONLY have 1 class. (Tuesdays & Thursdays from 2 to 5). OMG! Like what I am going to do with all the spare time? I decided I’m going to either look for another job, or volunteer somewhere. I already applied as a volunteer for Excel Youth Zone and plan to do so for the La Jolla YMCA!

Which begs the question, how will I spend my free time the rest of my summer.

1) Big Brother. Personally, my favorite summer show/addiction. Every year, it’s always nice to see a group of strangers in a random house get angry at each other & create drama within their own social cliques. :). I’m rooting for Britney this season to win personally, but that’s just me 🙂

2) P90x. An hour to an hour & a half each day of exercise. Also, I walk to campus whenever I have class, work, or need to meet somebody up.

3) Conversation Partners! Starting next week, I will meet people from random countries and have conversations with them to help them with their English, and hopefully in return gain their friendship. Not like I’m relying on them for confidence boosting though, because that would be bad according to Sharon Melnick.

4) Work. I really have much flexibility in this area, because I can control my hours and pretty much work whenever I want.

5) Cook. I can experiment with cooking, have time to fail/succeed depending on whatever the heck I plan to cook.

6) Games! I played Age of Empires for 2 days, got stuck, and got too tired to try again. I also started playing Pokemon again, I’m starting at fireRed and will work my way up to whatever the heck the newest game is at now.

7) Volunteer*. Potentially. I’m waiting on Excel Youth Group to tell me what I need to do to help them plan their big event in April! Hopefully I get involved logistically and meets lots of cool people. I also plan to go pick up an application at the La Jolla YMCA pretty soon. I have to go pick up an application at their office which is about half an hour away, which isn’t too bad, because campus is 20 minutes away, so it’d only be 10 minutes more of walking. I’m also reliving my high school VOC club experience by visiting Volunteermatch.org to see what I can do to help my local community. If there’s nothing, I might even go to the local library and help out, just for my own sake – it makes me feel better if I’m doing SOMETHING, rather than NOTHING in my apartment. 🙂

8) Summer Session II. Duh! 🙂

9) Plan my future. This is one thing I REALLY need to figure out. I wanted to work for the media, but it’s just so corrupt I don’t know if I can commit to advertising and selling products that I just don’t believe in. Journalism? All biased. Public relations might be something I would want to get into, but it’s not looking likely at this point in time. Furthermore, I decided NOT to go to law school, because seriously, I cannot picture myself nor can anyone I know picture me as a lawyer. I’d just be too nervous resting somebody else’s fate in my hands, not because I don’t have the confidence to do so, but I don’t want to have other people rely on me for something I’m not too comfortable with. Sure, I like law and the constitution, but that’s not a good enough reason to want to go. I always wanted to be a teacher though, so if it goes to that, I’ll probably graduate UCSD with a double major in Communications & History, and then try to get my teaching credentials in social studies and become a teacher locally in Orange County. Or maybe apply to Teach for America. As you can tell, these are all maybes because I’m not exactly quite sure yet. All I know is having a double major at UCSD is very useful, because it gives me more of a variety of options than ever before.

So in summary, here are my career options:

a) Law school –> highly unlikely at this point.

b) Business school –> maybe, but I hate math.

c) Graduate school –> Maybe, but I don’t know if I want to do research. Furthermore, this would probably be in history, and not communications.

d) Journalism school –> I really don’t want to be a journalist anymore, because I know how skewed journalism is.

e) Teaching –> Maybe. It only takes one year to get a teaching credential, BUT it takes months to study for the CSETS for social studies, and I have to take certain prerequisite classes depending on which school I want to get my credentials at.

f) <–. This option seems the most likely so I’ll put a star****** next to it, to remind myself. Keep branching my options out, and do a variety of things until I see myself in a position I really want to do. Get an internship somewhere to see if I like it, volunteer somewhere to see if I like it, and position myself in a place I want to be upon graduation. This is most likely what I’ll do. Using my Communications experience, I’ll try to get myself in an internship actually regarding my major. If I like it, maybe I’ll stick with trying to pursue that type of job. If not, I’ll just pursue another path. You’ll never know what you’ll like doing the rest of your life until you familiarize yourself with it, right? :).

Well, that’s about all the ground I have to cover on this long extensive July blog. I’ll see you all later 🙂
