It’s been a few days now with Kai, and I’m already starting to get a sense of how our routine will take shape—especially in these early stages of his life.
Due to the fact that he does not know his days from his nights quite yet, this has caused him to be slightly more excitable and irritable in the nighttime hours. He is as hungry as a hippo in the nighttime hours particularly, which can be difficult to us new parents used to sleeping at 9pm. Our first night home from the hospital was so tough, with him being hungry all the way up till the wee hours of 4am. He’s not particularly good at deeply latching during feeding sessions, resulting in potentially missed opportunities for milk. I bet Albert Einstein was able to have a deep latch as a newborn.
All he really does in a given day as a newborn is to eat, sleep, and poop. I’ve changed so many diapers already, and am slowly becoming a pro in the process of doing so. Also, a commonly used tactic I have to relieve baby while he is crying is rocking him back and forth and shushing him (like I do my students). Or walking up and down the stairs which he seems to enjoy and simultaneously gives me a much needed stairmaster workout.
Still trying to improve at swaddling, but getting better at it slowly. For the most part, the baby remains calm and sleepy so long as he is fed.
I’ve been reading to Kai every night, even though he obviously doesn’t understand it yet. I’m reading every blog of this website nightly until I reach the newest post (which is currently #2217, and growing). Hopefully he will be the successor of this blog in the future.
