Part of the calculus that comes with parenting is making on-the-spot decisions when it comes to what to do immediately after work. Before picking up Kai up today, the formula involved eating first and foremost, and picking up some essential supplies from Costco.
Could I have waited for another time to do these errands? Perhaps. But in that moment, it seemed like the most practical path at the time. Because his eating and sleeping schedule at my mom-in-law’s place is a bit more predictable and less chaotic than my mom’s, my urgency to rush home was slightly diminished. Although next year – if I’m back at Dale, there will be a whole lot less traffic in picking him up.
In the end, I imagine there will continue to be on-the-spot decisions that will intertwine a balance between me time and we time (aka time with Kai).
