My First Hydro

Once upon a time, a hydroflask found its way into the hands of an individual from a delightful café called Seven Leaves. This hydroflask possessed the ideal size for daily work endeavors, especially during the eventful 2019-2020 school year. Coincidentally, it was during this particular year that I had the opportunity to substitute teach at several school districts in the vibrant region of Orange County.

The hydroflask accompanied me faithfully through the days, providing a refreshing and sustainable source of hydration. However, on that fateful day of March 13th, 2010, as the sun cast its warm rays upon New Land Elementary, I unknowingly left the hydroflask behind in the welcoming embrace of the faculty lounge. Little did I know that this seemingly insignificant incident would soon be overshadowed by a monumental turn of events.

On that very day, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) made a decision that reverberated throughout Southern California. They voted to transition to remote learning for a brief period of approximately two weeks, in response to the emerging threat of the coronavirus pandemic. Following LAUSD’s lead, numerous school districts in the region swiftly followed suit, embracing the path of remote education. As I left the school premises, I couldn’t have anticipated that I wouldn’t see that hydroflask for an extended period of time.

Time passed, and the predicted two-week “shut-down” extended indefinitely, encompassing the remainder of the academic year. The hydroflask’s fate remained a mystery, lost within the confines of the faculty lounge, perhaps yearning for a future reunion. In the face of unprecedented challenges and uncertainty, the world adapted to remote work and distance learning, discovering innovative ways to connect and educate.

With the passage of time, the hydroflask became a symbol of nostalgia, a relic from a different era. Its absence was not forgotten but was woven into the tapestry of an extraordinary period in history. Life moved forward, and new chapters unfolded, yet the memory of that hydroflask lingered, a testament to the unforeseen twists and turns that shaped our lives.

To this day, the ultimate fate of Mr. Hydro remains a mystery. Perhaps it found a new purpose in the hands of a teacher in need, or maybe it embarked on an adventure of its own, exploring uncharted territories. While its physical presence may have faded, the memories and lessons learned during that tumultuous time continue to endure.

So, let us bid farewell to Mr. Hydro, the hydroflask that braved the challenges of the 2019-2020 school year. May it rest in peace, knowing that it played a small but significant role in a much larger story—a story of resilience, adaptability, and the indomitable spirit of those who weathered the storm together.
