The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a groundbreaking achievement in cinema, successfully blending serialized television elements into an interconnected movie universe. While some have criticized its trajectory since Spider-Man: No Way Home, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 was a satisfying conclusion to its trilogy, combining heart and humor.
Here are my top five Marvel movies, each for vastly different reasons:
5. Captain America: The Winter Soldier – This spy thriller was a surprising departure from the first Captain America movie and highlighted the poignant relationship between Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes.
4. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – A trailblazing film for Asian representation, this movie demonstrated that Asian males can also be superheroes. The film’s commitment to diversity is commendable.
3. Thor: Ragnarok – By far the best Thor movie, this film struck a balance between humor and seriousness, allowing the characters to develop in meaningful ways.
2. Spider-Man: No Way Home – A nostalgic tour-de-force, this film’s success lay in its ability to bring together all three versions of Spider-Man while staying true to the heart of the series.
1. Avengers: Infinity War – The culmination of all the superheroes together, this film centered around Thanos and was a triumph of storytelling. While Endgame was necessary to resolve the problems caused by the first, it paled in comparison to the raw power of Infinity War.
