Dale Coworkers

I learned early on in life it is important to get along with your co-workers. You don’t have to be best friends, but the better relationships you develop, the more enjoyable your job can be, even if it sometimes feel like you’re teaching on an island. Yet teachers have a unique relationship because sometimes only we can truly understand the struggles we face on an everyday basis battling the very same problematic students in our very own classrooms, and the politics of a school environment dealing with school culture and the needs of administration. Though we have lunch together everyday, it’s very rare we see each other outside of a school environment.

Which is why it was a pleasure having sushi with some co-workers for dinner prior to the LCAP meeting tonight – 2 history teachers (my competition), one Spanish teacher, and one math teacher. I truly cherish each and every one in different ways, even if it is unlikely we will all remain at the same school next year due to budget cuts.

Here’s hoping the LCAP meetings work, and class sizes are reduced next year to allow as many of us to stay as possible. If not, I will never do it again and forever lose faith in the process.
