Day 11: Venturing Into Buckethead

Amul Shah is my friend and former roommate from the University of California, San Diego.

I saw Buckethead for the first time this Halloween. He’s an extremely talented guitarist who has a wide variety of musical styles—Wikipedia lists some of his genres as funk, heavy metal, bluegrass, ambient, and J-pop. Some of his songs are strange, though, including quite a few that sound like chickens or weird noises. His songs are all instrumental, and while you probably won’t like many of his songs, you’re bound to find something you like amongst his 300+ studio albums. You read that right—he has 302 studio albums in his current discography.

Anyways, back to the concert—it was pretty cool, although incorporating some Halloween touches into his show meant that he probably played fewer songs than usual. He had his usual KFC bucket and white mask costume but he did change into another interesting costume for part of the show. It was still a blast to see him perform live for the first time. Here are some songs to give you an idea of some of the varied genres his music encompasses: Big Sur Moon, Jordan, Crack the Sky, Sled Ride, Squirrel on a Perch, Soothsayer, and The Redeem Team. Here is my personal playlist of his favorite songs. Lastly, here is a website I found that tries to help you find which album to listen to according to genre. Hope you can find something you enjoy!
