In the short story “Cathedral”, a blind man awakens another man with the sense of vision by making him question his everyday existence.
As I painted my watermark colors today at professional development at Rise Kohyang Middle School, I questioned my existence as well. Why am I here? Is it to paint these beautiful scenes of nature? Perhaps.

As you can see, my painting comes awfully close to the picture portrayed by the corresponding instructor’s. But, it’s not all about me.
It’s about this white guy, and his hard work.

It’s about this Asian guy, and his hard work.

And it’s about these two ladies and their hard work. Although, one is clearly better than the other, but who am I to judge?

Painting has awakened my eyes to new experiences never felt before. For the first time in my life, I can say that I have been touched. by an angel.
Later, we had our History Cadre session where I did nothing except plan my Snapchat-themed classroom for the year. It’s going to be cool, or as the kids would say it, “lit”. I’m still looking for my missing posters though.
We had Corner Bakery for lunch. While I would have much preferred the pasta there, the sandwich sufficed, although this was the first time I didn’t have seconds. I must still be bloated from the previous day’s happy hour. I also lost to a cripple at foosball which derailed my entire day.
Afterwards, we had another session about establishing culture from Day 1. It was very much like the same exact session I went to last year. In fact, it probably was. In the end, we reunited with our Rise family and chitchatted our daily complaints and what-not.
Afterwards I went up to pick up my new mattress for my new apartment.
New mattress.
New apartment.
New John Tran.
August 2017, I’m coming for you losers.
