The start of my journey at Rise was successful today! Many of the kids were very well behaved and respectful, and I didn’t have to deal with any major issues. However, it was only the first day, and so I’d like to still call this entire week “the honeymoon period”.

I told the kids my life story, and to many of them it was repeated three times (since they have me for history, technology, AND advisory). I hope they didn’t get too bored. Advisory was good and gave me the opportunity to conduct my first circle (or council), which went relatively smoothly despite how small my room was. I asked students to fill in a picture using their imagination, and one had the creativity to come up with none other than… Slenderman.

I had to choose a school to represent my advisory, and since my alma matter was taken (UCSD) I had to settle for Duke University. I chose it based on the mascot alone – the Blue Devils. My students I’m sure like that choice.

By the end of the sixth period I was relatively tired, as well as my students. I had to redirect a few of them to stop interrupting others, but it was done in a very lax manner.

Tomorrow: rules and procedures.

I hope my students don’t grow up too fast. I’m aware they’re mostly 8th graders but I’m hoping they stay mostly young and innocent (unlike my students in Vegas).

Just don’t grow up so fast
You don’t want to know what I know yet
Maybe on paper it looks better way up here
Don’t you hurry, try to take it slow
You will get there before you know it
Ain’t just the bad times, the good times too shall pass
So don’t grow up so fast
