Day 23: Superman

When I was in fifth grade, there was something about the song “Superman” by Five For Fighting that captured my attention, so much so that I would spend hours listening to the radio just to hear it. (This was before the advent of the Internet). Seeing that today was “superhero” day for spirit week, (even though I wore a batman shirt) this song is definitely fitting.

In examining the lyrics more deeply, it’s definitely not just literally about Superman. The song is essentially a metaphor for how everyone essentially presents a front for who they are, but when you look more closely you can see beyond the “silly red sheet”. I definitely present somewhat of a front around my students, especially when my mood was less than stellar (i.e. november post-breakup).

Today though, we had an amazing pizza party at lunch celebrating my favorite class – 2nd period (last quarter). Here’s their trash.

I guess I’ll have more of a chance to present myself as a professional, by coaching the boy’s soccer team in March and April. I’ll read up on how to do it so I don’t look like a complete fool.

After some delicious Pho and Thai tea, I celebrated the start of the weekend by meeting up with some peeps to watch Nightcrawler.

I successfully sought out the only “dollar theater” remaining in Las Vegas, and though the theater was smaller than I would like, the movie was pretty good (although it was a tad bit dark). Jake Gyllenhaal definitely should have been nominated for best actor for the movie though. It’s pretty cool to see his transformation in the movie and I would definitely recommend it. Movies are definitely better in a movie theater and not on a small laptop screen :).

It may sound absurd but don’t be naïve
Even heroes have the right to bleed
I may be disturbed but won’t you concede
Even Heroes have the right to dream
And it’s not easy to be me
