One of my earliest and most memorable experiences in life was when I attended kindergarten, in Mr. Brown’s classroom. During this time, I had a tendency to cry frequently, struggled to follow directions, and displayed an energetic and mischievous nature. Looking back, I realize that if I had been in the role of the teacher, dealing with a student like myself would have been quite challenging. Therefore, I am grateful for the presence of dedicated kindergarten teachers who provide their guidance and support in such situations.
As a young child and recent immigrant from Vietnam, I often felt a sense of sadness and separation from my mother while at school. My parents worked tirelessly to provide for our family, leaving me in the care of my kindergarten teacher. Unfortunately, I struggled to adhere to classroom instructions, which unintentionally created a challenging environment for my teacher. Reflecting on that time, I now understand that I was likely a late bloomer in terms of processing information and following instructions.
One particularly amusing incident occurred during lunch when a group of girls began chasing me around the playground. Fearful of the “cootie epidemic” that was circulating at the time, I decided to lie down on the playground, pretending to fall asleep. However, my impromptu nap led the school staff to believe that I had fainted, resulting in an unexpected trip to the emergency room. Looking back, this incident humorously captures the essence of my early school years—a mischievous and uninformed presence, yet full of curiosity and adventure.
Overall, I am grateful for the patience and understanding shown by Mr. Brown and other dedicated kindergarten teachers who play a crucial role in shaping young minds like mine. He was definitely a main character in my life that year.
