How to almost die at Yosemite

Approximately 12-15 people die a year at Yosemite National Forest, and you could be one of the lucky few if you simply follow the guidelines listed below.

  1. Be completely out of shape. Seeing as the “Vernal and Nevada Falls” hike is listed as “moderate” on the All Trails website, it was the hardest hike I have ever done in my life. We did that on Monday as the elevation rose all the way up to 2188 feet. Not to mention this was followed on Tuesday by the “Upper Yosemite Falls” hike, listed as “Hard” on the All Trails Website. With an elevation gain of 3175 feet, and it being equally as difficult hiking both up and down the path, it quickly surpassed Monday’s hike to be the most difficult hike of my life. Even though they were both difficult, I’m glad I accomplished my goal of trying what I would have otherwise thought was impossible for my weak Asian body.
When you are out of shape, you definitely feel each and every step as you go up the path. It’s equivalent to climbing up a never-ending staircase to heaven. The view at the top is obviously surreal and a much deserved payoff.
  2. Wear non-hiking shoes and shoes without much tread. I literally fell 11 times going down Yosemite falls because of how slippery the rain and snow made everything. I could have literally plummeted to my demise. Luckily for me, walking sticks helped me maintain some of my balance.
  3. Take a nap near the edge of the cliff, and if you happen to roll off to your demise, at least you’ll be having sweet dreams in the process.
  4. If all else fails, get a flat tire on your way back from Yosemite and almost die driving on the freeway. I’m obviously exaggerating, but you can clearly see how “lit” these tires end up becoming.

In all seriousness if you want to survive Yosemite make sure you’re in good company and make sure you have all the resources and supplies necessary to ensure your survival (lots of snacks, and water!)
