Day 15: Movie Reviews, 2017

Here I will review all the movies I’ve watched in theaters this year. This is the grading scale I will use

Half rack of ribs without sides: Terrible movie.
Half rack of ribs with sides: Okay movie.
Full rack of ribs without sides: Good movie.
Full rack of ribs with sides: Great movie.

So it’s kind of like using stars to rate a film, except it’s using ribs instead.

The Lego Batman Movie: This movie was funny, entertaining, and was probably the only DC movie this year that did Batman correctly.

Get Out: Excellent movie. It wasn’t scary, but it had a lot of implications and a lot of social commentary without being too SJW in tone or nature.

Logan: Quite possibly the best X-men movie because of how unique it was. Even though it was dark and depressing, I liked it overall because I cared about the character so much. Hugh Jackman will always be Wolverine in my book.

Beauty and the Beast: An unnecessary remake, but thoroughly entertaining nevertheless.

Power Rangers: I was a tad bit disappointed with this movie, because they were only in their suits for really the last 30 minutes of the film. It was just okay, and I hope the sequel does a better job. There was good character development at least.

The Boss Baby: terrible garbage.

Gifted: A heartwarming family film about a gifted daughter and a caring father.

The Fate of the Furious: Not good on a critical level, but entertaining enough to make me loud. I hope they go on the moon in the new movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2: This movie was okay. I was just hoping for a little bit more. It wasn’t as good as the first one, and begged the question whether a sequel was necessary.

Wonder Woman: Probably the best DC movie made in the “DCEU”. Even though the third act was kind of dumb and a CGI-fest, the rest of the movie made up for it.

It Comes at Night: terrible. didn’t even watch the entire movie.

Cars 3: Decent, but let’s be real – they only made this to sell toys.

Baby Driver: Thoroughly entertaining in each and every aspect of the word. I definitely recommend.

Spider-Man: Homecoming: I know a lot of people liked this movie, but it was just meh for me. Maybe I’m just tired of Spiderman in general.

War for the Planet of the Apes: Good ending to a trilogy, but I still liked Rise of the Planet of the Apes the best in this series.

Dunkirk: Visually stunning, but I was hoping for a little bit more of a Nolan movie.

Ingrid Goes West: I fell in love with the character and enjoyed this movie, despite its bleak undertones.

It: So overrated.

Flatliners: Pretty terrible stuff, even though I really like Ellen Paige and Jack Bauer.

The Foreigner: Good action scenes with Jackie Chan, but the political subplot I didn’t really care for and made the movie drag on.

Only the Brave: Excellent movie about firefighters that ironically enough, start fires.

Jigsaw: It’s not an Oscar contender by any means, but I was thoroughly enjoyed by the 8th movie in this franchise.

Thor: Ragnarok: I definitely enjoyed this movie, as I thought it was nicely entertaining and broke new ground in terms of a Marvel story.

Murder on the Orient Express: It was okay. The acting was good, but it was missing something that I can’t exactly pinpoint.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri: Pretty funny and yet dark and depressing at the same time. Ending disappointed me.

Justice League: Garbage.  I hope DC get its act together and start developing its characters more. I understand that this movie tried to make things more light-hearted after Batman V. Superman, but if you’re going to let Zach Synder control things, you might as well let him finish carrying out his vision.

Wonder: A heart-warming family film I would recommend to anyone. Especially ugly people.

CoCo: Definitely a great Pixar movie, and I hope it shatters box office records.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Being that I’m not obsessed with Star Wars as much as others, I really enjoyed this film. The casino subplot was meh, but everything else I felt was done well. I feel like a lot of people went into this movie expecting certain things to happen (after 2 years of analyzing Rey’s backstory or whatever), and those nerds end up being disappointed when their predictions were all wrong. I don’t really care for the hype, but I watched it to say it was decent, and certainly better than the prequels.
